HINLALATO (heen la la toh)
n.
1. It is the Filipino word for the third digit of the human hand and usually the longest finger, located between the index finger and the ring finger. It is also called the third finger, digitus medius, digitus tertius, or digitus III in anatomy. In most countries, extending the middle finger and pointing it upward is widely recognized as an obscene gesture to show or provoke anger, disappointment, fear, or even to joke around with other people.
2. A hard rock band formed back in May 2007, composed of men from different walks of life. Luden Salazar (Guitars), Godwin Samar (Bass) and Mike Mauricio (Drums) were all members of the band Jacob’s Ladder, while Jon Salazar (Guitars) was the former guitarist of an AC/DC and Black Crowes cover band Black Berry. Both of these brother bands participated in the Red Horse Muziklaban years back. Clang Santos (Vocals) met Luden and the rest of the boys through common friends and the band’s former personnel. Ever since, the music has never stopped playing for these guys. They found their common love for Classic Rock as their bond, and the desire to create music that they all enjoy as their pact.
HINLALATO’S SOUND
Hearing Hinlalato is reminiscent of how bands were back in the Woodstock days. Clang’s unique deep growling voice is like a cross between Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Aerosmith’s Steve Tyler. With his vocal range, he can render powerful low notes then suddenly belt out wails of high keys in a single breath. The Salazar Brothers handle their axes and share the lead like synchronized melody producers, though of obviously very different styles. Luden can create ear-tasty melodies and crazy solo screams like Audley Freed of the Black Crowes, while Jon brings in the groove of the blues with nicely-knit rolling chords and edgy symphonies a la Mick Ralphs of Bad Company. Godwin fits in well into the string section with his steady yet strong bass lines, much like the styles of Duff McKagan of Guns n’ Roses and Velvet Revolver. All these melodies are then held together with Mike’s excellent drum playing, taking much of his style from his idol, John Bonham of Led Zepellin. He gives each song character and an epic feel.
This group of musicians create music using straight-forward and unpretentious words, infused with heavy melodic riffs that touches the soul and tickles the senses. Straight up, in-your-face, no bullshit. This is Hinlalato.
